Question

How do oxygen and carbon dioxide levels in the blood affect respiration?

Open in App
Solution

Effect of oxygen and carbon dioxide levels in the blood, on respiration:

  1. Blood acts as a carrier of oxygen to the body.
  2. The oxygen molecule binds to the hemoglobin component present in red blood cells in the blood.
  3. The air inhaled carries oxygen, which increases oxygen concentration in blood, which circulates throughout the body.
  4. While returning back to the lungs, the carbon dioxide levels in the blood go up, thus expelling it from the lungs, and outside into the air.
  5. Hypoxemia: When oxygen level decreases in the blood, it results in Hypoxemia.
  6. It causes us to breathe more, increasing levels of oxygen in the blood.
