How do prokaryotes carry out aerobic respiration?

Aerobic Respiration:

  1. It is a process of cellular respiration that takes place in the presence of oxygen gas to produce energy from food.
  2. Such type of respiration is common in most of plants and animals, birds, humans, and other mammals.
  3. In the process, water & carbon dioxide are produced as end products.

Aerobic respiration in prokaryotes:

  1. Aerobic respiration is carried out in the cytoplasm of the prokaryotes.
  2. This is assisted by a structure called mesosome which are the infoldings of the cell membrane in a prokaryotic cell and also the site of oxidative phosphorylation.
