How do sometimes electrons gain energy? Which leads them to move to higher shells

Solution

When an electron is hit by a photon of light, it absorbs the quanta of energy the photon was carrying and moves to a higher energy state. The energy imparted by the photon makes the electron jump from a lower energy shell to a higher energy shell.
