Question

How do sponges get their food?

Open in App
Solution

Sponges get their food by:

  1. Sponges show holozoic nutrition which involves absorbing or ingesting solid food particles.
  2. Sponges don't have specific circulatory or digestive systems.
  3. Collar cells that are found in the central cavity trap and digest food particles.

Sponges:

  1. Instead of having a mouth, sponges bodies feature tiny pores called Ostia through which water is sucked.
  2. Cells in the sponge walls then filter the food that is present in the water as it is pumped out of the body through the osculum.
