Question
How do the roots of the plants absorb water?
Open in App
Solution
Absorption of water:
Water is absorbed by the root hair cells by a process called osmosis.
The concentration of the water molecules in the soil is usually higher than it is inside the root hair cells.
So water is absorbed by the root hair cells from outside.
Once water is absorbed its concentration in the root hair cells becomes more than the adjacent cells.
Thus water molecules move through osmosis from root hair cells to the neighboring cells.
This continues till the water reaches the xylem tissue in the root.
In xylem water travels upwards from one cell to the other against the gravity.
