Question

How is urine formation regulated in humans?

Open in App
Solution

Urine formation

  1. Urine formation in humans occurs in the kidneys.
  2. The impure blood containing salts, ions, nitrogenous wastes, and excess water enters the kidneys.
  3. Initial screening of wastes occurs in the glomerulus.
  4. The blood then enters the capillaries surrounding the proximal convoluted tubule, loop of Henle, and distal convoluted tubule.
  5. The impurities along with water enter the renal tubules.
  6. Glucose, urea, some water, and other substances present in the blood enter these tubules from the capillaries.
  7. Finally, the matter collected in these tubules forms the urine to be excreted.
  8. This urine formation is regulated by the antidiuretic hormone (ADH).
  9. ADH hormone regulates the concentration and the volume of urine.
  10. A high ADH concentration reduces the amount of urine produced while a low ADH concentration increases the volume of urine produced.
