On the basis of the amount of light passing through a material, they are classified into three types: transparent, translucent and opaque.
(i) Transparent materials allow light to pass through them completely. Examples include glass and water.
(ii) Translucent materials do not allow light to pass through them completely, but only partially. Examples: frosted glass, oiled paper.
(iii) Opaque materials do not allow light to pass through them at all. Examples: Wood, iron, aluminium foil.
