Biodiversity means the variety of living organisms present in an ecosystem.
Part 2: Biodiversity in insects
Among animals, insects are the most species-rich taxonomic group, making up more than 70 per cent of the total. The reasons for this are hypothesised as follows:-
Diversity in body part- Small size, variety of appendages and mouthparts, wing foldings enhancing movement, presence of exoskeleton all may have helped insects to adapt better to changing environments.
Genetic diversity- Insects have a diverse gene pool allowing for greater adaptability.
Reproductive ability- Insects have adaptations like diapause, sexual selection and a high rate of reproduction thus increasing population size and density.
