How do we know that in the given chemical equations what is the oxidation state of chlorine as chlorine can have +7,+5,+1,+3 and -7 as it's oxidation state

  • K is +1 since it is a Group 1 metal
  • O is -2

If we let oxidation state of Cl be x, then:

+1 +x + 3(-2) = 0

1+x-6=0

=> X = +5

So oxidation state of Cl is +5
