Question

How do we perceive sound?

Open in App
Solution

Involvement of ears in perceiving sound:

  1. The ear is also known as a mechanoreceptor because it changes mechanical sound waves into an action potential.
  2. The ear has also an important role in maintaining equilibrium and balance of the body.
  3. The human ear has three parts outer ear, the middle ear, and the inner ear.
  4. The outer ear and middle ear collect the sound vibrations and concentrate these sound vibrations into the inner ear.
  5. The auditory information is transmitted to the brain as impulses through the auditory nerve where it is integrated and perceived as sound.

Hence, the sound is perceived through the auditory impulses transmitted to the brain via the auditory nerve.
