How do you Add Methyl to Benzene?

  1. Addition of an alkyl group to benzene molecule is known as Friedel-crafts alkylation reaction. It is given in below diagram:
  2. This reaction is an electrophilic aromatic substitution reaction.
  3. This reaction method begins from methyl bromide of a methyl carbocation
  4. AlCl3 is act as catalyst, it form complex with methyl chloride to give methyl carbocation which further reacted with benzene to form final product.
