Question

How do you calculate atomic volume?

Open in App
Solution

Atomic volume:

  • The volume occupied by one mole of any element in a solid form is called atomic volume.
  • It is calculated as,

Atomicvolume=GramatomicweightDensityofelementinsolidform

  • Also, the atomic volume of an individual atom is calculated as,

Atomicvolumeofindividualatom=43×r3×π

  • where r = atomic radium of atom
  • The unit of atomic volume is cm3 or L.
  • In columns from top to bottom the atomic volume increases while in the period from left to right decreases first then increases.

Hence, atomic volume is calculated as the ratio of gram atomic weight to the density of elements in solid form.
