Solution

Classification of expressions:

An expression is a combination of terms that are combined by using mathematical operations such as subtraction, addition, multiplication, and division .

For example, 2x,7+3-2,3a*5 etc.

We can classify the expression according to these 3 conditions :

  1. Based on the number of terms expression contains
  2. Based on highest degree of the terms
  3. Based on number of variables it contain

1) Based on number of terms expression contains

  1. Monomial : Expression contains only one term . Example :5x,2xyetc
  2. Binomial : Expression contains two terms . Example :2a+b,4c+3etc.
  3. Trinomial : Expression contains 3 terms . Example : x2+2x+1,2a+b+cetc.
  4. Polynomial :Expression containing two or more terms

2) Based on highest degree of the terms

  1. First Degree: It is an algebraic expression with degree (1). Example : 3x,4yetc
  2. Second Degree: It is an algebraic expression with degree (2). Example : x2,4y2etc.
  3. Third Degree: It is an algebraic expression with degree (3). Example : x3,5y3+2x+2etc.

And so on.

3) Based on number of variables it contain

  1. With One Variable :Example : 5a,a+2etc.
  2. With Two Variables : Example : 3xy,x2+yetc.

And so on.

Hence, the expression can be classified on these 3 conditions .
