Open in App
Solution

Conversion of phenol to chlorobenzene -

Phenol on heating with Zinc dust form benzene and further reaction with chlorine followed by FeCl3 gives chlorobenzene

Step 1: First phenol is reacted with zinc dust, there is the formation of benzene which is further reacted in presence of chlorine gas and ironchloride to form chlorobenzene.

OHZINCDUSTBenzeneFeCl3Cl2Cl

Step-2

When we add powderedzincdust to phenol, Zinc will react with oxygen to form of zincoxide.

One of the chlorine will attach ironchloride to form FeCl3 and other chlorine will attack the benzene thus, form chlorobenzene.
