Question

How do you convert r=4sinθ to rectangular form?

Open in App
Solution

Convert polar form to rectangular form:

The given polar form is r=4sinθ.

Multiply each side by r.

r2=4rsinθ

Substitute y for rsinθ in r2=4rsinθ:

r2=4y

The equation of circle is x2+y2=r2 whose center is at the origin.

Substitute 4y for r2 in x2+y2=r2:

x2+y2=4yx2+y2-4y+4=4[Subtracting4yandAdding4onbothside]x2+y-22=4a-b2=a2-2ab+b2x2+y-22=22

The above equation has center 0,2 and radius 2.

Hence, the rectangular form of the given polar from is x2+(y-2)2=4.
