The vernier calipers has two scale - one is main scale and other is vernier scale. The least count of vernier scale is defined as $L . C = 1 M S D - 1 V S D$ where $M S D =$ main scale divisions and $V S D =$ vernier scale divisions.
If n divisions on vernier scale coincide with (n-1) divisions on main scale, the least count, $L . C = (1 - \frac{n - 1}{n}) M S D$ . The least count of the veriner calipers is also known as vernier constant.
