Question

How do you determine the boiling point?

Open in App
Solution

Boiling point -

The boiling of any liquid is the temperature at which the vapour pressure of the liquid is equal to atmospheric pressure exerted on the surface, since the boiling point is different on an indifferent surface, therefore liquid has a different boiling point at different places

Determination of Boiling point-

There is the various method by which a sample boiling point can be determined. One of the method is the capillary method.

  1. In this method, an inverted capillary is placed in the liquid for which we have to determine the boiling point.
  2. As we provide more temperature, the air present in the capillary escapes and the vapor of the liquid takes it place.
  3. Once the vapor pressure in the capillary exceeds the atmospheric pressure, vapor escapes as bubbles.
  4. As the liquid cools, vapor pressure in the capillary will start decreasing. When it approaches the atmospheric pressure, the liquid will start filling in it. The temperature at which this happens will be the boiling point.
