Solution

According to IUPAC, the functionality of a monomer is defined as the number of bonds that a monomer's repeating unit forms in a polymer with other monomers.

The functionality of a monomer means the number of bonding sites present in it, e.g., the functionality of ethene, propene, styrene, acrylonitrile is one and that of ethylene glycol, adipic acid, hexamethylene diamine is two.
