Question

How do you find the average rate of change of f(x)=x2+x;x3to6

Open in App
Solution

Step-1: Find the values of f(a) and f(b).

The formula for the average rate change of f(x), from x=atox=b is Averagerate=f(b)-f(a)b-a and here, b=6,a=3.

Now,

f(x)=x2+xf(3)=32+3f(3)=12

And,

f(6)=62+6f(6)=36+6f(6)=42

Step-2: Find the average rate change of f(x).

Substitute the given values in the above formula to find the average value:

Averagevalue=f(b)-f(a)b-a=f(6)-f(3)6-3=42-123=303=10

Hence, the average rate change of f(x)is 10.
