Question

How do you find the perpendicular line of an equation ?

Open in App
Solution

Finding the perpendicular line of an equation:

If two lines are perpendicular to each other, then they meet at right angles (i.e. 90 degrees)

To check whether the two lines are perpendicular, multiply their slopes.

If the product of the slope is equal to-1, then the given lines are perpendicular.

If m1 is the slope of one line and m2is the slope of perpendicular line , then

m1xm2=-1

Equation of perpendicular line through coordinate (x1,y1)

y-y1=m2(x-x1)

For example, consider two line equations

y=2x+1(1)

y=-0.5x+4(2)

The slope of the first equation is 2

The slope of the second equation is -0.5

Now, multiply two slope values,

2x(-0.5)=-1

Thus, the given equations are perpendicular to each other.

Hence, in this way we can find the perpendicular line of an equation.
