The range is found after substituting the possible $x-$ values to find the $y-$values.

Consider a function $y=f\left(x\right)$

1. The spread of all the $y$ values from minimum to maximum is the range of the function.
2. In the given expression of $y$, substitute all the value of $x$ to check whether it is positive, negative or equal to other values
3. the minimum and maximum values for $y$.
4. Then draw the graph for same.

Hence, we can find range of a function putting the value of $x$ in the function $f\left(x\right)$, and the spread of maximum and minimum value of $f\left(x\right)$ is the range.
