How do You Identify a Salt?

To identify a salt:

A salt is combination of positive ion(cation) and negative ion(anion). An atom which electron are anions while which looses electron are cations.

  • Appearance of the compound- According to the properties of salts, salts are white in color but d block elements shows color because they have d-d transition between them.Cr3+showsvioletcolorandCo2+showspinkcolor.
  • Flame test- The color of the flame indicate to which atom the salt belongs.
  • Reaction with Hydrochloric acid- Hydrochloric acid is added dropwise, the precipitate formed indicate the salts.
  • Sieve analysis- The salt is identified by checking out its granules.
