Question

How do you identify different types of Bond(Pi and Sigma) and how do you find the no. of them ?

Open in App
Solution

Then, it is a matter of counting the bonds in the correct Lewis structure according to the following simple rules:
  1. Every single covalent bond is a sigma bond.
  2. Every double covalent bond has both a sigma and a pi bond in it.
  3. Every triple covalent bond has a sigma and two pi bonds in it.
or
Usually, all bonds between atoms in most organic compounds contain one sigma bond each. If it is a single bond, it contains only sigma bond. Multiple bonds (double and triple), however, contains sigma and pi bonds. Double bonds have one each, and triple bonds have one sigma bond and two pi bonds.

1 single bond = 1 sigma bond

1 double bond = 1 sigma bond + 1 pi bond

1 triple bond = 1 sigma bond + 2 pi bonds

So, you’ll get that:

#sigma bonds = #single bonds + #double bonds + #triple bonds

#pi bonds = #double bonds + 2 * #triple bonds
