Question

How do you make an electromagnet?

Open in App
Solution

Electromagnetism.

  1. When an electric current flows through a conductor, it produces a magnetic field around the conductor.
  2. Due to flow of current in a conductor, it behaves like a magnet, this form the basis of electromagnetism.

Making of electromagnet

  1. Electromagnets works on the principle of electromagnetism.
  2. A simple electromagnet consists of a length of metal wire wrapped as a coil around a metal core.
  3. This combination is connected to a power supply i.e. battery as shown in figure.
  4. When current starts flowing through a coil it produces a magnetic field and coils behave like a magnet
  5. In this way an electromagnet can be made.

Explanantion of Diagram:

  1. In the diagram we have an electromagnet
  2. In this electromagnet a copper wire is used in coil form
  3. This coiled wire is wrapped around iron core.
  4. Battery is used to give electric current in the circuit.
  5. Due to this electric current in wire, magnetic effect is generated surrounding the wire
  6. Thus electromagnet is generated
