Question

How do you make sodium hydroxide from sodium bicarbonate?

Open in App
Solution

The sodium hydroxide can be prepared from sodium bicarbonate:

  1. Heating sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3) at 850°C will generate sodium oxide.
  2. 2NaHCO3(s)850°CNa2O(s)+H2O(g)+2CO2(g)
  3. This sodium oxide can be cooled and converted into sodium hydroxide NaOH via the addition of water.
  4. Na2O(s)+H2O(l)2NaOH(s)

Therefore, the above points and reaction diagram clearly explains the formation of sodium hydroxide from sodium bicarbonate
