Solution

Simplify the expression:

Given expression is sec4x-tan4x...(1).

Note that,

secx=1cosxtanx=sinxcosxcos2x=1-sin2x

Apply a2-b2=a+b(a-b) in equation (1)

sec4x-tan4x=sec2x-tan2xsec2x+tan2x=1cos2x-sin2xcos2x1+tan2x+tan2x=1-sin2xcos2x1+2tan2x=cos2xcos2x1+2tan2x=11+2tan2x=1+2tan2x

Hence, sec4x-tan4x=1+2tan2x.
