How do you tell if a reaction is exothermic or endothermic?

Open in App
Solution

  1. In a chemical reaction, if the sum of the enthalpies of all the reactants is greater than the sum of the enthalpies of all the products, the reaction is said to be exothermic in nature.
  2. On the other hand, if the sum of the enthalpies of the products is greater, then the reaction can be considered to be an endothermic one.
