Fire is a symbol for human desire. Humans always desire to have something more, something someone else has. Eventually, with this greed to have more and more, humans may destroy each other in order to get more than the other or simply by having this negative emotion in their mind.
Contrary to fire, ice is a symbol of hatred. Hatred itself is negative and it increases negativity within the person. This negativity can make humans destroy others as well as themselves. In this way, both have a strong potential to destroy the world.
