How does a cube of ice transform itself into liquid water?
Heat is released.
Ice being a solid comprise of very closely packed molecules which possess less kinetic energy. Our target is to convert it into the liquid state in which particles are comparatively at a greater distance and will have higher kinetic energy. So, heat energy has to be supplied to ice so that the forces of attraction between the particles break up and kinetic energy increases.
