How does a hydroponic system work?

Open in App
Solution

Hydroponics:

  1. ''Hydro” is the Greek word for water, and “ponos” means work. In hydroponics, the water does the work of delivering nutrients to the plant roots.
  2. Examples: herbs, lettuce and greens, tomatoes, peppers, and strawberries.

Working of the hydroponic system:

  1. Through the direct delivery of nutrients to the roots, a hydroponics system does away with the requirement for soil.
  2. Plants are either grown in a soil-free media like coconut coir, rock wool, or LECA or they are suspended directly in the aqueous solution.
  3. Either an active or a passive system delivers the fertilizer to the plant's roots.
  4. In a hydroponics system, additional lighting is often provided to the plants.
