How does a nickel metal hydride cell work?

Open in App
Solution

Dear Student ,
Nickel hydride is a type of rechargeable cell and it is abbreviated as Ni-MH .The positive electrode is made up of usually metal hydride from alloys of Lanthanum and rare earth metals as they are the solid source of reduced hydrogen that can be oxidized to form protons .The electrolyte is alkaline Potassium Hydroxide and the cell voltage is 1.2 volts .
The basic concept of Nickel metal hydride cell is as follows
The negative electrode reaction is H2O + M + e- OH- + MH
And the positive electrode reaction is Ni(OH)2 + OH- NiO(OH) + H2O + e-
A fully charged cell supplies an average of 1.25 V .
Many electric battery vehicles and other electronic appliances uses this NiMH cell .
