How Does a potometer work?

Open in App
Solution

Potometer:

  1. The device used to measure the transpiration rate in plants is known as Potometer.
  2. It is also known as a transpirometer.
  3. Transpiration is the loss of water through the stomatal pore, due to the evaporation process.
  4. It is a long tube, a side tube at right angles.
  5. A sample of the plant leaf is taken to the side of the tube into the tube's mouth through a cork.
  6. Then, water is supplied to the instrument and the joints are sealed.
  7. Then this setup is placed under sunlight.
  8. As air bubbles move into the tube, the lower end of the tube is then set up in the beaker which contains water.
  9. The shoots absorb water and the leaves perform transpiration.
  10. Due to this the air bubbles start to move up.
  11. The rate of transpiration is measured using the amount of water absorbed by the plant and the movement of the air bubble.
