Question

How does a spore capsule of moss perform photosynthesis?

Open in App
Solution

Photosynthesis in moss:

  1. Moss are photosynthetic plants known as Bryophyta.
  2. They are non-vascular, i.e., no xylem and phloem for transport of water and food.
  3. The moss develops a spore capsule which is known as chlorenchyma.
  4. The chlorenchyma (contains chloroplast) cells help in assimilation and are parenchymatous (functional cells) which comprise chloroplast cells.
  5. The chloroplast is specialized organelles that perform the process of photosynthesis via harnessing the sun's energy to produce food.
  6. Hence, the moss is able to perform photosynthesis due to the presence of chlorenchyma cells.
