Question

How does atomic atomic radius change as we move along the period?

Open in App
Solution

Trend in atomic radius:

  • The atomic radius of an element is a measure of the size of its atom, and the distance from the center of the nucleus to the outermost isolated electron.
  • Atomic radius generally decreases from left to right along a period because the electrons are added to the same shell due to this there is an increase in nuclear charge.
  • Hence, the increase in nuclear charge leads to an increase in the intermolecular force of attraction from the nucleus which decreases the size of an atom.
