Question

How does bacteriophage help in controlling diseases?

Open in App
Solution

Bacteriophage:

  1. Bacteriophages are virus cells that attack bacteria.
  2. The term bacteriophage means ‘Bacteria eater’.
  3. Hence, they can be used to control and kill bacteria, even those bacteria that are resistant to antibiotics.
  4. They can thus be used independently or simultaneously to kill disease-causing bacteria.
  5. They invade the bacterial cell, to create multiple copies of themselves inside the host bacteria, in turn killing the bacteria via lysis and thus releasing new phage cells (lytic cycle).
