It is a yellowish-green fluid secreted by the liver which contains biliverdin, bilirubin, and bile salts in it.
Role of bile in digestion
Bile helps in the emulsification of fats i.e. it helps in the breakdown of large fat globules into tiny droplets which increases the surface area for lipase enzyme to act on and thereby helps in the digestion of lipids.
It also provides an alkaline pH, which is optimal for the action of pancreatic and intestinal enzymes. This is necessary for the complete digestion of food in the small intestine.
