How does calcination differ from roasting?

Difference between calcination and roasting:

  1. In the process of extraction of metal from the ores, the ores are converted to oxides by roasting and calcination method.
  2. In the roasting process, the ores are heated in presence of air (oxygen), and in the calcination process the ores are heated in absence or in limited amount of air (oxygen).
  3. The calcination is used for carbonate ores and roasting is used for sulphide ores.
