Once carbon monoxide is inhaled, it enters the bloodstream and mixes with haemoglobin to form a stable compound, carboxyhaemoglobin. When this happens, haemoglobin can no longer carry oxygen to the tissues. This lack of oxygen causes death of the cells and tissues.
