How does carbon monoxide emitted by automobiles prevent the transport of oxygen in body tissues?
Carbon monoxide is produced by the burning of fuel in cars, trucks, fireplaces etc. It can accumulate indoors and can poison people and animals that inhale it. Once carbon monoxide is inhaled, it enters the bloodstream and mixes with haemoglobin to form a stable compound, carboxyhaemoglobin. When this happens, haemoglobin can no longer carry oxygen to the tissues. This lack of oxygen causes the death of the cells and tissues.
