Question

How does cellular respiration relate to everyday life?

Open in App
Solution

Cellular respiration:

  1. Cellular respiration refers to the metabolic processes and reactions that occur in cells or organisms to convert chemical energy from nutrients and oxygen into adenosine triphosphate (ATP) and waste.
  2. All living organisms respire in order to release energy to power their metabolic processes.
  3. Aerobic or anaerobic respiration can occur.
  4. Aerobic respiration involves both oxygen and glucose, whereas anaerobic respiration only includes glucose.

Cellular respiration in everyday life:

  1. All living organisms require energy to perform a variety of bodily functions.
  2. Food stores energy and cellular respiration is required to release the energy.
  3. In cell metabolism, various intermediate products of the Krebs cycle and glycolysis are used for the biosynthesis of complex organic compounds.
  4. Carbon dioxide released during respiration replenishes the carbon dioxide required for photosynthesis by green plants.
  5. Fermentation is a type of anaerobic respiration that is used to produce a variety of useful products such as organic acids, vitamins, alcohol, antibiotics, tanned leather, bakery, and dairy products.
