Question

how does competition between Kinetic energy and intermolecular force of attraction effects physical state of water

Open in App
Solution

Dear Student,
When the intermolecular forces of attraction are more then the water is present in solid state but when the temperature increases the kinetic energy of the molecules increases and the water passes from solid to liquid
There is an inverse relationship between intermolecular force of attraction and kinetic energy . When the kinetic energy is more the intermolecular forces are less .At maximum kinetic energy intermolecular forces of attraction are minimum.
State - Solid/liquid/gas
Kinetic energy minimum <medium<maximum
forces of attraction maximum> medium>minimum
