Question

How does electronegativity of elements change on moving from left to right in a period?

Open in App
Solution

Electronegativity- It is a chemical property that describes the tendency of an atom or a functional group to attract shared pair of electrons toward itself. Electronegativity varies inversely to atomic size.

Across the period-

  • Nuclear charge increases and the atomic radius decreases.
  • The tendency of the atom of an element to attract the shared pair of electrons towards itself increases.
  • Hence, the electronegativity of the element increases.
