The embryo gets its nourishment from the mother’s blood through placenta. Placenta contains villi on the embryo’s side of the tissue. On the mother’s side are blood space, which surrounds the villi. This provides a large surface area for glucose and oxygen to pass from mother to the embryo. In this way, embryo gets its nutrition. The wastes generated by the developing embryo is also removed through the placenta by transferring them into the mother’s blood.
