Question

How does evaporation cause cooling?

Open in App
Solution

Dear student,

Evaporation is a process by which liquid is converted into vapour. Since, it is a surface phenomenon, it takes the heat out of the body and causes cooling. This is known as the cooling effect of evaporation.

Detailed Explanation of Principle

Evaporation causes cooling naturally. The underlying principle behind this is, in order to change its state, matter must either gain or lose energy. . So, the liquid takes this energy from its surroundings. ie, Evaporation occurs when particles of the liquid absorb heat from the surroundings. The absorption of heat increases, the energy of the particles of the liquid, and they escape the liquid from surface to gaseous form.Since, particle of liquid absorbs heat from the surrounding ,the amount of heat present in the surrounding decreases which causes cooloing in the surrounding.
