Question

How does gene flow counteract natural selection?

Open in App
Solution

Gene flow:

  1. It is also referred to as gene migration.
  2. It is the phenomenon in which genetic material is transferred from one population to another.
  3. It is said to be the process in which genes are exchanged among two separate populations.
  4. Example of gene flow: Migration of some rare finches from their habitat to another island in the food search.

Counteraction of natural selection by gene flow:

  1. Gene flow alters the gene frequencies that are a result of natural selection thus, it counteracts the process of natural selection.
  2. Gene flow tends to maintain and increase genetic variation and, on the other hand, natural selection tends to reduce genetic variation and favor survival and reproduction of the same species over time.
