Ice is a solid comprise of very closely packed molecules which possess less kinetic energy. On heating, the particles in ice gain kinetic energy, at the melting point of ice (0C), the particles gain sufficient amount of energy to overcome the inter-particle force of attraction and get converted into liquid form. At 0C energy supplied is used to overcome intermolecular forces and no kinetic energy is gained by particles.
