Lichens:

  1. Lichens are composite or complex organisms.
  2. It is a symbiotic association between algae or cyanobacteria and fungi.
  3. The algae or cyanobacteria reside in between the filaments of multiple species of fungus mutually.
  4. The fungal component is called mycobiont and the algal component is termed phycobiont.
  5. The algal component produces carbohydrate or glucose by the process of photosynthesis which is utilized by both the components.
  6. The fungal component plays a role in water absorption and retention.
  7. Lichens propagate or reproduce asexually, by means of vegetative propagation.
