Liver:

  1. Liver is both an organ and a gland present in the abdomen, below the diaphragm.
  2. It is the largest gland of the body.
  3. It serves a dual function - as endocrine and exocrine glands.

Function of the liver:

  1. Production of bile juice.
  2. Proteins, fats, and carbohydrate metabolism.
  3. Activation of enzymes.
  4. Storage of minerals, vitamins, and glycogen.
  5. Synthesis of various clotting factors and plasma proteins such as albumin.

Detoxification by the liver:

  1. One of the prime functions performed by the liver include detoxification.
  2. Liver filters out various toxic substances from the blood such as drugs, urea, bilirubin, etc.
  3. All the toxic substances from the liver get mixed with the bilirubin and are either transported to the kidney for excretion through urine or to the small intestine for egestion through the feces.
