Question

How does Nostoc reproduce by fragmentation?

Open in App
Solution

Nostoc reproduces by fragmentation:

  1. Despite the fact that transduction and conjugation have been seen in a few unicellular cyanobacteria, Nostoc has no sexual reproduction. However, vegetative reproduction does exist in Nostoc, and fragmentation is one of the modes.
  2. Mechanical disturbances frequently break Nostoc colonies.
  3. The filaments are broken down into little bits as a result, a new filament grows from each piece having at least one cell. Cell division increases the number of cells in a filament.
