Question

How does Nostoc reproduce by heterocysts?

Open in App
Solution

Reproduction in Nostoc:

  1. Heterocyst cells serve as a weak link in the production of hormogonia.
  2. Heterocyst produces endospores in some species (for example, Nostoc commune).
  3. Along with the replication of DNA, the protoplasm divides and cleaves into endospores. Upon liberation, these transform into new strands. In this species, the heterocyst germinates into a germling and develops into a new filament.
